Not to make Mr. Shakespeare roll in his grave but that really is the question. My company needs capital to get started, to grow, and to become profitable. What is the best way to get that capital? I personally don't have the money to fund my business. My credit score is improving but is still not good enough to get a traditional bank loan. And besides, I don't think the bank will loan me the amount I'm looking to raise. I don't have any rich relatives who could loan me the money (at least I am unaware of any said rich relatives).
So what are my alternatives? OPM (other people's money)!! I could go after angel investors. I am researching that possibility but once again, I may not be able to raise enough money going that route.
So we come to the topic of this blog article: Venture Capital (cue ominous music). Venture Capital scares the bejezzus out of me. I get images of secret societies with secret handshakes and back alley deals. I imagine a VC (venture capitalist) asking me really tough questions that I have no answer for. I imagine myself making up figures just to make them happy. I see myself humbling myself before old men in gray suits and still not getting the money. Unrealistic? Perhaps but that is what is going on inside my head. Do I understand venture capital? Yeah, I think so but that doesn't mean I'm going to be successful if I try to raise venture capital. Am I confident in my management team? Yes, 100% confident but do they have a valid reason to have the same amount of confidence in me? I am learning and I will continue to learn what it is I need to learn in order to make Real McCoy Fantasy Sports a successful corporation. Right now that learning process is focused on preparing myself to enter the venture capital ring. The VCs are Mike Tyson in this arena when Mike was REALLY scary to face. Will my company be Michael Spinks and get knocked out in 90 seconds flat or will I bravely enter the fray as the next Buster Douglass and beat the odds and take the money from the champ? Only time will tell but it won't be for a lack of trying I can guarantee you that!!!
